OUR PEOPLE

Training & development
Achieving our full potential
We want to give our people every opportunity to thrive in their careers, for their benefit and the development of Kazakhmys. Our training programmes allow employees to reach their full potential and ensure we enjoy a motivated workforce that helps us achieve our corporate goals.
Focusing on training and development
We invest heavily in training and education for all our employees, enabling them to build rewarding careers with us. Our Copper Division has an annual plan that identifies priorities for training and allocates budget to those areas.
Our dedicated technical colleges at Satpayev and Balkhash provide higher education, and classroom and operational training in mining subjects. Additionally, every employee takes regular operational, health and safety refresher courses, while some retrain in new areas to develop their careers.
Delivering more training opportunities
In 2010, we invested $1.1 million in training more than 33,000 employees from our Copper Division and Ekibastuz GRES-1 power plant. The Copper Division also sponsored 200 high-potential employees to take part-time studies at technical universities in Kazakhstan. More than 1,800 additional employees continue to receive further or higher education at colleges in Kazakhstan and abroad.
We also identified priority professions for our business in each region. New employees in these professions will attend one of our company training centres. This ensures we invest in their skills from the moment they join the company.
Investing in the next generation
We are investing in the next generation of company leaders. In 2010, 119 managers and specialists at our Balkhash, Zhezkazgan and Karaganda complexes attended training on management principles. We are also developing a 'Top 100' programme to identify potential future leaders. This will also promote opportunities for career development across the group.
