OUR PEOPLE

Reward & recognition
Recognising the contributions of our people
Paying employees a competitive salary is essential for attracting and retaining talented people. Our research shows that our Copper Division pays salaries higher than the average wages in Kazakhstan. The salaries are also higher than those of other large mining companies in the country.
Assessing and rewarding performance
Fair and competitive remuneration is essential for recruiting and retaining a talented workforce. In 2010, we launched a Performance and Management System. This ensures we judge performance fairly and reward employees appropriately.
Young specialists grade
We have introduced a 'young specialists' grade to attract, retain and develop young people in engineering careers. The grade is available to technical and professional staff who join Kazakhmys within five years of graduating. Read more
Young Specialists Councils
We have established Young Specialists Councils at each copper operation. The councils help attract, retain and develop young employees, and establish a pool of potential leaders. Each council has between three and fifteen members, elected by our young specialists for two-year terms. Young specialists also receive additional benefits, such as free housing.
Pensions schemes
Kazakhmys contributes to defined contribution pension schemes in Kazakhstan, where this is a legal requirement, and in the UK.
Medical and leisure benefits
Our Copper Division provides free medical and dental services for employees and at less than half price for their families and retirees. In 2010, our medical facilities treated 7,653 employees, 1,344 retirees and 2,528 relatives.
The division also funds leisure activities and summer camp holidays for employees' children. More than 5,200 employees, 1,000 retirees and 100 relatives used these facilities in 2010. In the same year, over 3,200 of our employees' children spent their holidays at our summer camps.
