Ekibastuz
Providing power to Kazakhstan
Kazakhmys is more than one of the world's leading natural resources groups. Our 50% ownership of the Ekibastuz power station makes us one of the largest domestic power providers in Kazakhstan.
Supplying Kazakhstan and Russia
Ekibastuz is the largest power station in Kazakhstan. In 2011, 90% of Ekibastuz GRES-1’s electricity sales volumes were made to external customers based in Kazakhstan, with the remaining output exported to Russia.
Extending our power capacity
Ekibastuz GRES-1 has five turbine units in operation and a capacity of 2,500 MW. A sixth unit will be reintroduced by the end of 2012, increasing capacity to 3,000 MW, and by 2017 the plant should have eight units in operation, with a total capacity of 4,000 MW. The upgrade is funded from the internal cash flows generated by Ekibastuz GRES-1.
Energising our local communities
With around 1,000 people working at the plant, Ekibastuz plays a major role in the region's communities. To reinforce this commitment, our people support various social funds, including children's funds and infrastructure development projects. Ekibastuz GRES-1 also runs a graduate programme, which provides practical work experience and gives graduates the opportunity to apply for permanent positions at Kazakhmys.
