Company overview
Extracting value from natural resources
Kazakhmys PLC is one of the world's leading natural resources groups. Included in the UK's FTSE 100 Index and with principal operations in Kazakhstan and the surrounding region, our market capitalisation is $13,373 million.
We focus on producing and selling copper. With over 20 years' reserves, we are the largest copper producer in Kazakhstan and eleventh-largest in the world. We also produce and sell significant quantities of zinc, silver and gold as by-products. Additionally, Kazakhmys is the largest power provider in Kazakhstan, managing over 20% of the country's supply.
Growth in EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation)
Kazakhmys enjoyed another year of growth in 2010. Steady output combined with positive pricing led to a 74% increase in Group EBITDA (excluding special items) to $2,835 million. See our key financials for more detail.
Copper and other metals
Kazakhmys Copper is a fully integrated business comprising underground and open pit mines, concentrating and smelting complexes, refining facilities, coal mines, captive power stations, and over 1,100 km of railway infrastructure. We produce zinc, silver and gold as by-products.
Power
Kazakhmys Power owns 50% of Kazakhstan's largest power plant: Ekibastuz GRES-1. The power plant supplies 14% of the Kazakhstan market and exports 8% of its output to Russia. The station currently has a capacity of 2,500 MW with potential capacity of 4,000 MW.
Refined copper products (MKM)
MKM is based in Hettstedt, Germany. The company produces copper and copper alloy wires, flats, tubes and bars for Europe's automotive, construction and manufacturing industries. MKM has strong product leadership in several areas. However, it is outside our core mining activity and currently held for sale.
Eurasian Natural Resources PLC (ENRC PLC)
We hold a 26% interest in ENRC PLC: a diversified and integrated natural resources group. At the end of 2010, this stake was worth $5.4 billion. ENRC PLC's mining, processing, energy, logistical and marketing operations encompass Kazakhstan, Russia, China, South America, and Africa.
