CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY

Local investment
Strengthening the local economy
At Kazakhmys, we are committed to supporting the Kazakhstan economy and local businesses across the country. We helped found and fund ‘Made in KZ’: a national programme to encourage local suppliers. In 2010, our Copper business and Ekibastuz Power plant spent about $1,024 million with Kazakh suppliers: almost 62% of combined spending on goods and services.
Creating a local sourcing unit
We are one of the first companies in Kazakhstan to launch a unit dedicated to local sourcing. The unit assesses local companies' ability to supply us and establishes lasting relationships with successful applicants.
Financing local companies
We have provided local companies with interest-free loans to grow their businesses. The suppliers do not have to start repaying the loans for nine months, allowing them to put their business on a sound footing. Read more
Moving from imports to local supplies
To reduce our reliance on imported products, we run an import-substitution programme that aims to purchase products locally. In 2010, the programme led to contracts with 10 Kazakh suppliers totalling around $30 million.
Working with Kazakh businesses
We operate several joint ventures with local businesses to supply Kazakhmys. These oint ventures include:
- KazBelAz, a truck company, of which we own 51%.
- MysShina tyre recycling plant in Zhezkazgan. Which we established to provide both operating and environmental efficiencies. Read more
