Investing in our local communities
Our connections with Kazakh communities span generations. Many of our operations are remote, with local communities created alongside the mines and facilities. So it is only right we invest in the people and communities that have made Kazakhmys one of the world's leading natural resources providers.
Contributing to the national economy
As one of the largest employers and taxpayers in Kazakhstan, we contribute substantially to the country. Our revenue represents more than 2% of the country's gross domestic product. Most of our 61,000-strong workforce are Kazakh citizens, while income taxes and spending contribute to the country's economic growth.
Investing in local people
We run the largest social investment programme in Kazakhstan. The programme invests in constructing and maintaining social facilities such as schools, hospitals, roads and infrastructure near our operations. This ensures our operations benefit the business and communities, and strengthens our ties with local people.
Consulting with our communities
In Kazakhstan, we consult through the local authority regarding operational activities that may affect communities. When acquiring subsoil licenses, we must also involve local residents in developing new operations. For example, Kazakhmys Projects LLP has conducted community consultations at our Bozshakol development programme.

Our Social Fund
In 2011, we will launch a Social Fund to manage investment in social projects that are additional to our license agreements. This commitment will benefit our employees, local people and the company, making our communities even better places to live and work.
