
What we do
Mining and concentrating
Kazakhmys operates 17 underground and open pit mines across Kazakhstan. In 2010,
we mined 32.9 million tonnes of copper ore, which is processed in our
10 concentrators. We also produce and sell significant quantities of zinc, silver
and gold as by-products.

Smelting and refining
We operate two smelting and refining plants, which smelt copper concentrate to
produce copper plates (anodes). We then send the anodes to our electro-refineries
to produce copper cathode with a minimum copper content of 99.95%.

Power
We operate three coal-fired plants that generate all the power we need for our copper production and market excess capacity commercially. Our plants generated 5,684 GWh of electricity in 2010. In turn, we own two mines which supply coal to these captive power plants. read more
Kazakhmys is the largest domestic power provider in Kazakhstan with 20% of the market share. In addition to our captive power plants, we own 50% of the country’s largest power station (Ekibastuz GRES-1), which produced around 11,065 GWh of power in 2010.

Support services and logistics
As an integrated business, we run our own support services. These include
engineering teams, construction companies and transport infrastructure
comprising around 1,100 km of railways, 100 locomotives, 800 wagons, and road
haulage fleets.
