Operations

Kazakhmys is one of the world's few fully integrated copper producers, from ore through to finished metal. Our main operations encompass mining and concentrating, smelting and refining, captive power, support services and commercial power.

Corporate strategy
  • To optimise existing mines and improve efficiency in all our operations.
  • To deliver major growth projects. These include Bozshakol, Aktogay, various mid-sized mine developments, new concentrators and concentrator upgrades.
  • To diversify and create value, principally in Central Asia. This involves actively seeking and acquiring attractive undeveloped natural resource assets.

Corporate responsibility

Kazakhmys runs the largest social investment programme in Kazakhstan. We invest in:

  • infrastructure, including constructing and maintaining schools, hospitals and roads for communities near mines
  • education, including opening a boarding school in Astana and a technical college in Balkhash during 2009, and a second employee training centre in 2010
  • cultural preservation initiatives through sponsorships and charitable donations.

Our environmental initiatives include:

  • new emissions-reducing technology at Ekibastuz GRES-1 – Kazakhstan's largest power plant
  • halving sulphur dioxide (SO²) emissions through a sulphuric acid plant in Balkhash.
